News and Information on Birding Sites Throughout Thailand and the Andaman

Among the many questions foreign birders ask when visiting the kingdom, the No. 1 FAQ is undeniably this: Which sites in the kingdom are best for spotting birds?

-That is one question that simply cannot be answered in a short sentence.

Every birder who visits Thailand has their own personal agenda in mind. Some are after numbers and want to compile a long list to take home; others are after a specific species; some don’t care, and are just happy to enjoy whatever nature decides to toss their way. In any case, the bottom line is that all visiting birders only have a limited time frame for birding and want to make the most of it.  -How does one find (or decide) which sites are the most suitable to their tastes and desires?

To help answer this riddle, I have compiled a list of “Top-10” birding sites for various regions in the kingdom.  The goal of these reviews are to help birders decide which sites are most conducive to their birding needs as well as to help identify the where to locate the target species they may be after.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I’ve added a list of  “Sites to Avoid” for each region, as a warning for those who may not know what they are getting into.

I expect there will be some disagreements concerning my ratings on some of the sites. Some birders may feel that perhaps that I may have an “ulterior motive” in promoting some sites to a higher ranking than others. To start off, I would like to state that I have nothing to gain by promoting any site over another. I ranked these sites with a variety of factors in mind, ranging from visitor popularity and satisfaction to actual statistics, checklists and recent birding reports. I would also like to emphasize that these are by no means “official” rankings; these are my personal thoughts on the matter and whether or not they are of consequence to your future plans or itineraries is of your personal discretion.

I intend to review these rankings at least once a year and update each list as needed, in order to offer the freshest and most recent information to visitors, with the hope that it will translate into rewarding birding with memorable experiences that will last for a lifetime.

If any birders wish to share their thoughts or trip reports with me for that matter, please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address: phuketbirder@gmail.com.

Note: Not all the links are working as most of the reviews are still in the works. We wish to apologize for the inconvenience and will try to complete these reviews in the near future.
