News and Information on Birding Sites Throughout Thailand and the Andaman

South Thailand Birdwatching is organizing a pelagic trip off the coast of Phuket. The trip will be held on the 26th of October.

The boat we are renting is designed to be used as a sport fishing boat and can carry up to 12 persons. The cost of the boat will be divided among all participants. Right now we still have room for more birders if anyone is interested in joining up.

This time we will be heading over to the drop off point in deeper waters. The last trip we took a few years back we stayed around Koh Racha and ended up with dozens of Long tailed Skua, a few frigates and a number a terns.

This trip is an exploratory trip and has the potential to net some interesting species. Highly-anticipated on the “wanted” list are birds such as Swinehoe’s Storm Petrel, Brown Boobies and Bridled Tern, along with shearwaters and frigates.

Some people are interested in seeing if the Aleutian Tern is about in the deep waters at this time of year; if so, this would be a new addition to the Thai lists. The bird is present in the waters off Penang Island during the migrating months, so the chances of it being found here is plausible.
